Low-Flying Fighters in Vouraikos Valley for Exercise Iniochos 2026
The unmistakable silhouette of a Hellenic Air Force F-4E Phantom II banking through the rocky terrain of the Vouraikos Valley during low-level training ahead of Exercise Iniochos 2026.
Ahead of Exercise Iniochos 2026, several fighter aircraft conducted low-level training flights throughGreece’s Vouraikos Valley, a dramatic canyon that has become a well-known location for aviation photographers hoping to capture fast jets flying close to the terrain.
During the days leading up to the exercise, photographers gathered at a number of vantage points overlooking the valley. Some of these locations are easily accessible by road, while others require a short hike to reach. The effort is well worth it, however, as the views into the canyon provide an excellent perspective for watching aircraft weave their way through the mountainous landscape.
Activity in the valley featured a varied mix of aircraft. Hellenic Air Force F-16s were observed making several passes through the canyon, while Mirage 2000s from the French Air and Space Force also took part in the low-level warmup ahead of the multinational exercise. Hellenic Air Force Mirage 2000s made a rare appearance, much to the delight of everyone in attendence.
One of the highlights of the week was the participation of Hellenic Air Force F-4E Phantom II. Although the type is approaching the end of its operational career, the Phantom remains an impressive sight at low altitude. Seeing the large twin-engine fighter threading its way through the narrow canyon, framed by steep rock walls, was easily one of the most memorable moments of the outing.
Not all of the activity involved fast jets. Pilots from the Slovenian Air Force also flew Pilatus PC-9 aircraft through the valley, putting on a particularly spirited performance as the agile turboprops maneuvered through the terrain.
On average, the valley saw around eight to ten passes per day. As is often the case with low-level flying, the activity came in bursts. Long periods of quiet were suddenly broken by the sound of approaching aircraft echoing through the canyon before they appeared in view.
For aviation enthusiasts and photographers alike, the Vouraikos Valley continues to offer a spectacular opportunity to observe military aircraft operating at low level in a breath-taking natural setting. With Exercise Iniochos bringing aircraft from multiple nations to Greece each year, the area remains one of the most exciting locations in Europe for capturing low-level military aviation.
