American Airlines Boeing 737-800 N840NN in 100th Anniversary Special Livery at Curaçao
American Airlines Boeing 737-800 N840NN visited Curaçao on April 29th 2025, operating flight AA2739 from Miami International (MIA/KMIA). This was the first visit to the island for this particular aircraft wearing American's 100th anniversary special livery, making it a welcome addition to the logbook.
The harsh April light and heat haze that plague spotters at this time of year ruled out ground shots, so both photos were taken on approach to runway 11. The usual audience was present — a small herd of goats keeping watch from the scrub, and a couple of ATV tour groups passing by with puzzled looks at the guy with the big lens standing in the back of a pickup truck!
American Airlines was founded on April 15th 1926, when a collection of small regional carriers were consolidated under the American Airways name. The airline adopted its current name in 1934 and grew steadily through the mid-20th century to become one of the world's largest carriers. Key milestones include being the launch customer for the Douglas DC-3 in 1936, pioneering the first coast-to-coast scheduled jet service in 1959 with the Boeing 707, and launching the SABRE computerised reservation system that revolutionised airline ticketing. Following a merger with US Airways in 2013, American became the world's largest airline by fleet size, a position it continues to hold today. The 100th anniversary livery celebrates this remarkable century of aviation history.
