Aviation Photography at St-Barth Gustaf III Airport TFFJ: Winair DHC-6s, Tradewind PC-12s and Island Islanders

St-Barth's Gustaf III Airport SBH/TFFJ is one of the most challenging and visually spectacular airports in the Caribbean. The runway sits on a narrow strip of land between a hillside and the sea, requiring pilots to execute a steep descending approach over the crest of a hill before touching down on just 650 metres of tarmac. For photographers, the hilltop offers an unobstructed view of every arrival at close range — making it one of the best spotting locations in the region.

On November 15th 2022 I made a day trip from Sint-Maarten by ferry, spending the day capturing the steady flow of turboprop traffic that keeps this small French island connected to its neighbours. The Twin Otter and BN-2 Islander dominate operations here — Winair contributed three DHC-6 movements with PJ-WII, PJ-WIQ and PJ-WIU, while Trans Anguilla VP-AAF, Anguilla Air Services VP-ACT and SXM Airways PJ-SXM kept the Islanders busy. Tradewind Aviation PC-12s N2727K and N881TW, St-Barth Executive F-OSTB and Air Antilles F-OMYS completed an enjoyable and productive day.
