Germany trip: Detour to Belgium
Having managed to score shots in Nörvenich ahead of the Corpus Christi holiday, we found ourselves needing a new target. After considering a few US military bases, along with some civilian airports, we decided to take a chance on Florennes airbase in Belgium. The base had sent several fighters to Luke AFB in Arizona for training, therefore it was unknown how much activity there would be, but the impending demise of the F-16 in Belgian service was enough to take a chance.
After a 3-hour drive, we set up at spot 2 and waited. We had snacks and water but nothing was moving or making a sound. After an agonizing amount of time, the sound of an APU coming alive gave us hope. After a few shaky moments, with shutdowns a crews scambling, 4 Begian Air Force Vipers taxied out. The day would not be a waste, with 3 of the 4 F-16s successfully photographed, having experienced an autofocus “glitch” for the first jet’s departure.
With that, we decided to call it a day and head back to Germany for some rest, anticipating a full day at Köln-Bonn airport (EDDK) the next day.
